Juliana Friend is a PhD student in anthropology at UC Berkeley. Her dissertation work explores the intersection of new media, sexuality, and Islam in Senegal. Juliana examines transformations in sexual education practice in a region officially marked by and popularly stigmatized for sexual violence. She also collaborates with LGBT activists in Senegal on issues of online activism and human rights.
With the support of an Innovations for Youth Fellowship, she is researching parental responses to a new Senegalese sex ed curriculum that aims to reconfigure intergenerational communication practices regarding sexuality and sexual health. She works closely with teens and staff at the Centre Conseil Ado (CCA), an adolescent health center, in Kolda, Senegal, Her personal victory has been learning to explain the menstrual cycle in Wolof.
She has also teamed up with the Berkeley Center for New Media (BCNM) to launch Many-to-Many, an interactive online archive of ethnographic conversations recorded around the world.
