CARLY BARKER
Carly Barker is a first-year student in the MS Global Health and Environment program interested in the intersections between environmental health and maternal and child health in global communities. Expanding on her previous interests and research in understanding barriers to implementing methods to reduce pesticide exposures in resource-poor areas, this summer she will be working on a study in collaboration with the Central American Institute for Studies on Toxic Substances (IRET) to assess the health effects of pesticide exposures among organic and conventional farmers in the region of Zarcero, Costa Rica.
"I have long been interested in investigating the health effects of contact with pesticides and am excited to work with an established group of researchers at the Central American Institute for Studies on Toxic Substances (IRET) to understand how farmers in Costa Rica are impacted by these exposures. I am excited to learn from the farmworkers and other researchers working on the project and am hoping to gain the skills necessary to develop my own project in the future."
Project Title: Assessing occupational pesticide exposures and adverse health outcomes among conventional and organic farmworkers in Zarcero, Costa Rica.
